Board Spotlight

Board Spotlight: Sarah duPont

The Amazon fires brought renewed, worldwide attention to the Amazon. But the fires are not the only threat the Amazon faces. There is another serious threat to the Amazon: Illegal gold mining. And it’s the reason we’re featuring board member Sarah duPont today.

Who is Sarah duPont?

Sarah DupontIn addition to being a wonderful person and of great importance to the Partnerships for Change team, Sarah is also President and Co-Founder of the Amazon Foundation, as well as a producer and filmmaker of environmentally focused documentaries.

Sarah is someone that genuinely cares about ecological preservation, and her latest work reflects that. She recently co-directed and co-produced a film titled “River of Gold” that catalogs how illegal gold mining practices are destroying the rainforest, polluting rivers, and increasing mercury levels in the water and soil.

Gold mining in the Amazon contributes to both climate change and the destruction of the Amazon’s natural habitat. Hundreds of tons of earth have to be eliminated to find only a few grams of gold (about what is found in the average wedding band), and these illegal miners are more than happy to do it.

Sarah has long been a warrior for environmental preservation and reform, and we’re so happy to feature her as our Board Spotlight member.
